Audi e-tron electric SUV set for September launch

Audi’s all-electric SUV will be unveiled for the first time on September 17th. The pioneering SUV is set to be a pivotal breakthrough in all-electric family cars.

The new Audi e-tron will boast an impressive 402bhp and will have a range of almost 250 miles.  The e-tron will be able to use its maximum power output for eight seconds through using a ‘boost mode’ accessible via an ‘S’ drive on the drive selector.  The electric SUV will also deliver impressive performance stats with a 0-62mph time of less than six seconds with an electronically limited top speed of 124mph.

The German giants have indicated that up to 30% of the e-tron’s total range will be generated by energy recuperation which will be predominately created by the electric motors as opposed to the brakes. Audi have claimed that 90% of the time, the vehicles braking is controlled by the car’s motors rather than each wheels brakes. The exact amount of recuperation can be chosen by the driver using steering wheel mounted paddles, which will range from no additional drag on the motors to high recuperation where the e-tron can be driven on one pedal.  It’s claimed that the technology will enable the SUV to have an extra one kilometre of range for each kilometre travelled downhill.

Audi have confirmed that they will be using a 95kWh battery source that will be comprised of 26 modules. The new e-tron SUV will be built on the same MLB platform that the German manufacturer has based the Q5 and Q7 on.

Recharging the e-tron

Due to the significant investment undertaken by Audi within the sector, it’s claimed that the e-tron will be able to charge from flat to 80% in under half an hour. Alongside the model, there will also be an e-tron Charging Service introduced which will grant drivers access to 80% of charging points across Europe.  When purchasing the model, you will be provided with a 11kW home charging system that will recharge the battery fully in 8.5 hours. There will be an optional 22kW charging kit which will halve this time.

Stepping inside the e-tron, you will immediately notice the dashboard has taken lead from the Q8. A multi-screen set-up and 12.3” Virtual Cockpit are the centre piece that will keep you up to date with everything you need to know while out on the road.  The e-tron will be the first of Audi’s eight car assault on the SUV market.
